Fires are devastating. They can result in injury, death and loss of property. Home fires can ignite quickly and become very difficult to contain in a short amount of time. In order to prevent home fires, it is good to be aware of some of the common ways they start.
Cooking Equipment
Cooking equipment is the leading cause of home fires. The majority of kitchen fires occur when people get distracted while cooking and leave the kitchen. Something cooking unattended on the stove can very readily lead to a fire. Leaving things like paper towels, napkins and other combustible items near the stove can literally throw fuel on a fire. Grills also contribute to the number of home fires. It is important to be a safe distance from homes, tree branches and table clothes when grilling.
Heaters
Heating equipment can also easily start fires. Improperly used space heaters are a major source of fires. In order to be safe, they should be positioned a minimum of 3 feet away from any flammable materials, including upholstery, drapes, magazines and wastebaskets. Chimneys are another heating accessory responsible for home fires every year. They should be regularly cleaned to prevent the build-up of combustible materials inside the chimney.
Irresponsible Smoking
In addition to being a very unhealthy habit, smoking irresponsibly can result in a home fire. If you must smoke, the safest place to do it is outside of the house. For those who can’t or won’t smoke outdoors, all butts should be totally extinguished and soaked in water before being thrown in the garbage. Butts that are dropped on the carpet or down in a sofa can smolder for a long time before igniting into flames.
Candles
Candles can be nice touch when entertaining or for bringing serenity to a room, but they are definite fire hazards. Be sure to place them away from flammable materials and extinguish them before leaving a room.
By being aware of the leading causes of home fires, you can better protect yourself and your loved ones.
