Benefits of Fire Safety Training for Families

Posted by Mel on 12/28/2012 to Fire Safety
Every ten seconds, a house fire occurs in America. Fire departments across the U.S. are called on every minute. Each year, 20,000 people are injured during house fires. That is why it is so important to teach families about fire safety and what to do if their house does suffer from a fire. Keeping families protected is what firefighters do best, but it is important that each adult and child knows what to do in case of a fire. Having discussions about fire safety with children may seem useless to some people, but it can help save lives, homes, and pets each day.

Fire safety is one of the most important things that people can learn in life. It is important to come up with a plan in case fire does strike a home and where to go once you get out of the home. Each family should have a meeting spot to meet at to ensure that each family member has gotten out safely of a burning home. Fires typically occur during the night and early hours of the morning when a lot of people are sleeping. That is why it is crucial that each home has working smoke alarms that are tested often to ensure that they work properly.

Children and teenagers are very curious about fire. It is important to teach children and teens about fire safety and when it is okay to use fire, and when it is not. Adults in each home need to keep lighters, matches, and any other type of item that can be made into fire out of reach of small children. One item that is found in most homes is a candle. A lot of homes have many candles that are lit to enjoy scents and to keep warm. Candles are a common fire starter, and that is why it is so very important to make sure that candles are blown out before falling asleep or leaving the home. Stoves and ovens are also big fire starters if left unattended, so each family member needs to have knowledge on proper use and care.
