Fire Safety Begins & Ends At Home

The first thing that needs to be in the home is a functional smoke alarm. They are inexpensive and easy to install. One should be placed in every level of the home. By keeping smoke alarms in our homes we nearly double our rate of survival.
Electrical cords and circuits, appliances, or alternate heaters cause most fires in the home. It is important to never place cords or wires under flammable items like rugs or in high traffic areas. Outlets and extension cords should not be overloaded. Appliances should be turned off if they are not functioning properly and a spark or an uncommon smell is noticed. It is a good idea to unplug appliances when they are not being used. Portable heaters need to have sufficient space to operate. Keeping items at least three feet away is a good rule of thumb. Chimneys need to be cleaned every year if a fireplace is used. The buildup of creosote can easily catch fire.
Home fire sprinklers are effective and affordable. When sprinklers and smoke alarms are used together, the likelihood of surviving a fire increases dramatically.
Every family needs to have a plan of action if a fire should occur. Plans should be simple and practiced. Remember to not open doors that feel hot and stay low to the ground when escaping from a fire. Emergency crews need to be notified as soon as you exit the residence.
By planning ahead and following these simple tips on home fire safety our families will be safe.
