If you have a deep desire to help people, and willingness to do whatever that takes, firefighting may seem like the perfect job for you. However, finding a job as a firefighter can be difficult. The competition is high, and you need to have what it takes.
So What Does It Take To Be A Firefighter?
1. Meet the Basic Requirements
The first step in becoming a firefighter is of course, meeting the basic requirements. To apply, you will have to be over the age of 18 (or in some states, 21) and have graduated with a high school degree or GED. You will also need a valid drivers license, and be able to pass an extensive background check. Make sure that record is clean!
2. Further Your Education
Although high school is the highest level of education required for becoming a firefighter, you will most likely not exceed the competition without a further education of some sort. An associate or bachelor degree will help you tremendously, especially in the fields of chemistry, biology, communications, or math. You could even specialize further by studying public safety or by taking a fire technology class.
Most (if not all) fire departments will require you to go through EMT training, so getting that done before you apply is definitely a good thing to have on your resume. Take it a step further and become a certified Paramedic as well.
3. Get Experience
Aside from all of the physical and educational requirements, what fire departments are really looking for is people with the heart and integrity that it takes to be a firefighter. You can show your character by volunteering in your community on a regular basis. It doesn't necessarily need to be firefighting related - as long as you are showing your willingness to serve and the value that you have for your community and the people around you.
To show your dedication and interest in the field, get connected with local firehouses in your area. By getting to know the people there and volunteering your time and service, you will earn a good reputation and possibly make some great connections that will help you out in the future.
4. Prepare, Prepare, Prepare!
When the time comes for you to apply for a firefighting position, you will need to pass several rigorous exams. You will need to pass a psychological test, as well as a written exam that deals with judgement calls and problem solving.
Being in good shape is extremely important, as you will need to pass an extremely difficult physical ability test. Make sure to research this test further to know what you are getting into, and prepare for a long time beforehand by developing a workout routine. As you will also need to pass a medical exam, make sure you are eating well and maintaining an overall healthy lifestyle.
By working hard to achieve a good resume, and by being dedicated and prepared for the job, you'll be well equipped to achieve your goals and become a great firefighter.
