4 Fire Safety Tips

Posted by John Feld on 4/19/2014 to Fire Safety

According to the Federal Emergency Management Agency, over 3,400 people in the United States perish in fires each year and another 17,500 are injured. Many fires happen at home. Following some basic fire safety tips may help save your life.

Install a Smoke Alarm on Every Level of Your House

Smoke alarms are an inexpensive way to protect your loved ones. They emit a jarring noise designed to wake the soundest sleeper if smoke is detected. It is important to have one on each floor. Regularly test them and replace the batteries annually. Smoke alarms typically need to be retired after ten years of use.

Practice an Escape Plan

If a fire breaks out, there is usually very limited time to escape. Knowing what to do can mean the difference between life and death. Practicing an escape plan with children is particularly critical. Tell everyone to stay close to the floor when there is a fire and never open hot doors. Pick a designated location to meet outside.

Have a Fire Extinguisher

Many fires begin in the kitchen. Having a fire extinguisher nearby can provide a quick way to put out a fire before it gets out of control. These small handy devices can mean the difference between a small fire that is easily extinguished and a conflagration.

Observe Fireplace Safety

Fireplaces can be very cozy on cold winter nights and add a decorative touch to a home. They are also potential fire hazards. A fire screen can be an effective way to keep a fire in the fireplace. It is also important to have the chimney cleaned every year. Creosote forms inside a chimney when a fire burns. It is very flammable and if enough accumulates can cause a chimney fire.

Taking some basic precautions can help to limit the possibility of a destructive fire in your home. Installing smoke detectors are very important. Practicing an escape plan, having a fire extinguisher and observing fireplace safety are additional measures to take.
