5 Essential Tools to Pack in Your Turnout Gear

Posted by John on 12/26/2013 to Fire Safety
Have you ever wondered what little things you could carry in your turnout gear that might one day make all the difference in the world? Here are five things that no firefighter should ever be without.

1. Electrical Tester
When you enter a burning building, you have no way to tell if the power is on or not. Even if it is off, there can still be live wires hidden in odd places. A non-contact voltage detector is a small device you can place on an insulated wire – if the device’s light flashes, the wire is live. This tool is crucial for threat assessment and will help speed investigations as well. It will not take much space in your gear either. A good non-contact voltage detector is about the same size as a thick pencil. Most home improvement stores sell them for around $15 apiece.

2. Multi-Tool
Carrying a good multi-tool can eliminate the need for a large variety of other tools. The pliers, wire cutter and knives will always come in handy. Plus, most models have Philips and flat screw drivers, files and a whole host of other implements you can use on the job. Most multi-tools come with a belt holster for ease of access and they can cost anywhere between $50 and $100.

3. Tin Snips
This tool is becoming more and more popular among firefighters. As far as cutting implements go, it is one of the strongest and most versatile tools you can carry. A good set of tin snips will be able to cut wire, sheet metal, laminates, thin plywood, and more. They are inexpensive to buy – most hardware stores sell them for around $10.

4. Door Wedge
This tool is invaluable for firefighters. Doors closing behind you can become a deadly situation quickly. Door wedges come in many forms – you can make your own wooden wedges or there are fancy plastic models to buy. Some firefighters even drive a large nail under a door or into the floor to keep it from closing. Some door wedges will cost you nothing at all while the most expensive molded models will cost only $25.

5. Screwdriver
It is a good idea to carry a couple of sturdy screwdrivers along with your multi-tool. Aside from being able to take apart hinges or anything else that stands in your way, a screwdriver can be used as a punch, pry bar and much more. Plus, if you are like most other people, you won’t have to buy one because you already have a ton of extras laying around.
