Being A Firefighter Is Tough Work

Posted by Feld Fire on 8/12/2014 to Fire Fighting

It is a statement that many people feel is self-explanatory, but really, but it isn't. There is this misconception about what being a fire fighter is all about and while some of it is true a lot of it is fantasy. Being in this line of work is extremely stressful and sometimes harsh. Here are some things to think about before you think about jumping on that red fire truck.

Like Sleep?

You won't get much here. Granted, fire fighters have different days in which they have to stay at the firehouse and live out it, you won't always be there. It is during that time they have to be on the highest alert because if the alarm goes off they are gone in a matter of moments. This can occur multiple times a day and at any time day or night because fire happens when it happens. Some times you might not have a fire or an emergency for days, but when duty calls you have to be ready to move.

Like your bed?

You won't be in it for long. When it is your shift you are at the firehouse and cannot leave to go home even at night. You'll find that living for a week plus at times away from home can put a strain on you and your relationships.

Like safety?

Then you probably shouldn't be in this line of work. You are going to go into burning buildings, forest fires, and sometimes you will be surrounded on all sides by walls of flame. This line of work lends itself to those few who run toward the problem rather than away. If you aren't like that, don't think that you're lesser for it, just know that you're human; and fire fighters need to be more than human at times.

that is easy because you can nap while you are at the fire dept.
