The first step in the process of becoming a firefighter is to make sure you are ready for the hard work, crazy hours, challenge and commitment in this profession.
Get In Touch With Your Local Firefighter Precinct
If you are ready for the challenge of becoming a volunteer firefighter you will want to do a little bit of research. It is strongly suggested to search out your local fire precinct and inquire as to the nearest and best facilities for you. It's important to remember not every fire department has volunteer openings at their station. But they will be able to guide you to the nearest one that does.
Choose A Station And Fill Out An Application
Now that you have found a fire department that suits your needs, you will want to fill out a volunteer application for their department. This process may take a few weeks, due to screenings, wait and other measures taken to do background checks. So, it's important to stay patient and focused and be ready for when the call comes.
You're Accepted, Now What?
Now that you have been accepted, you will sign up for their training course. Typically these courses require over one hundred hours of training time. It will be conducted though a NFPA registered course and supervised with trainers in that fire department.
