Getting Educated on Fire Safety and Passing on the Knowledge

Posted by Bryan on 10/5/2012 to Fire Safety
Thousands of children are injured every year because of fire related incidents. It's important to educate ourselves about fire safety and be able to use our understanding of it to educate children as well. Things that may be common sense to adults often need to be explained to young children, so be careful to explain things in detail.

One of the first things that most adults teach their children regarding fire safety is never to play with matches. It's also important to instruct our children to keep a safe distance from candles, fireplaces, things that are cooking on the stove etc. It's also important to teach our children about avoiding other behaviors that could potentially start a fire. Things like playing with electrical cords or outlets, or hanging clothing or a blanket over a lamp can be very dangerous and need to be avoided.

It's also very important to have a plan in place so you and your children know what to do if there is a fire. It's good to have an escape route and a meeting place decided on ahead of time. A good escape plan should also have more than one way to get out of the house. For example, if a bedroom door is hot and too dangerous to open, escaping through a window would be another option. It's always important to check if a door is hot before opening it because a hot door could mean that there is fire on the other side. If the house is filling with smoke you need to stay down low to try to stay out of the rising smoke while you make your exit.

These are just a few tips concerning fire safety for children. There is a lot more that you can talk about with your children to help keep them safe in an emergency. A fire can be frightening and confusing but talking about it ahead of time will help your family be prepared to act appropriately in an emergency.
